The Roman town of Cupra, rich in temples, baths and palaces, the remains of which can be visited at the various archeological sites which have been brought to light, was razed to the ground by the Moors in the eighth century. Upon its ruins rose the castle of Marano, long ruled by the curia of Fermo.

Francesco Sforza, papal legate to the Marche, lived in Marano during the seignorial period, residing at the palace which bears his name or is known alternatively as the Palace of the Vassal.

The records tell of musical rejoicings and balls, while the voice of Bianca Visconti, Duchess of Sforza, conquered all hearts.

For several centuries life at the castle carried on in tranquillity, up to the unification of Italy, when with a change in the status of the lower village of Cupra, known henceforth as Cupramarittima, old Merano Castle fell into disuse.

Yet, in the words of the poet Oreste Ciucci, "To return to the castle of Merano in for each of us a gradual journey back like a lost swallow to the origins of our being, to savour in copious draughts the pure water of live spent in simplicity and humility with the blessed memory of never-returning childhood".
